Sustainability is one of the key principles of Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) V2.0 that guides both the educators and the children in thinking for the current generation and the next generation as well. This principle encourages educators to focus on developing natural world’s appreciation in children (AGDE, 2022).
What is Sustainability?
EYLF V2.0 classifies sustainability into three categories. The first is Environmental Sustainability which refers to the natural environment that we all live in. So, sustainability here is the mindful use of natural resources so future generation are not deprived of the natural environment. The second is Social Sustainability which is the inclusiveness and social cohesiveness in the society and the third is Economic Sustainability which focuses on economic growth without detrimental effect on other dimensions (AGDE, 2022).
How can we incorporate Sustainability in early childhood settings?
There are different ways in which we can apply sustainability in early childhood settings. The most effective and fun way is to take children for a nature walk to the local park or zoo. This helps to develop appreciation for nature and its beauty, which in turn will encourage them to protect the environment.
We can also invite the families to take part in volunteer activities focusing on sustainability. This will not only help to save the environment but also foster Social Sustainability as everyone feels they are on the same team working towards a common goal.
The third way is focusing on Recycling. This approach can be effectively implemented by incorporating children songs such as The 3Rs by Jack Johnson which will not be environmentally friendly but also economically.
How Sustainability Principle helps in children’s learning, development and wellbeing?
Adopting sustainability in early childhood settings have shown to help children develop better interpersonal skills following the transition into kindergarten (Benner, Thorton & Crosnoe, 2017). Similarly, sustainable activities develop an attitude of gratitude and respect to the environment and society as a whole making them a better citizen in the future . Finally it also help to enhance their empathy and acceptance skills which ultimately guides them towards positive mental health (Bunch, n.d.).
